Hayato Kamitani, usually referred to by his surname, Kamitani, is a student at Morinomiya Academy. He is the second member of the school's babysitting club and baseball club. He is in the same class as Ryuuichi, one of his best friends.

He is impassive and normally has an expressionless expression, conveying a stern and fierce expression only when he has strong feelings, especially when he is angry with his younger brother, Taka. He tends not to speak unless necessary, a trait he shares with his father, Taizou, who is a teacher.

It has been noted on several occasions that Hayato's bad habit of hitting people on the head comes from Shizuka, his mother. He loves baseball - his greatest desire is to play at Koshien Stadium - and is good enough to be considered the club's all-star (although he himself repeatedly describes the club as being "weak").

Hayato is the firstborn son of science teacher: Shizuka Kamitani and chemistry teacher: Taizo Hebihara. As a child, Hayato had a somewhat abnormal relationship with his father Taizou, as he was a very strict father. Before his younger brother was born, his parents divorced and his father, Taizou, left home, causing Hayato to harbor hatred towards his father for not raising Taka and for not presenting himself as his biological father.

However, Hayato sometimes shows his father's discipline and advice to control Taka's instances of misbehavior. He is not prone to angry outbursts, but uses baseball swings as an outlet to vent his emotions. Although he doesn't admit it, he loves his younger brother very much, who calls him "stupid Aniki" a lot (aniki means: brother).
