Dick loves Christmas. It’s his favorite holiday of the year. He loves seeing Gotham, and Blüdhaven, painted white every year. The laughter of children echoing through the air, playing in the snowy parks, building snowmen, and snowball fights are a staple for a Gotham winter, after all. The criminals spend time with their families, or gangs, or whatever bar is still open, which lets the city’s vigilantes take a night off and spend it together.

He remembers his first Christmas in the manor. He had been grieving his parents for almost 6 months when Christmas came around. It was the first Christmas without his parents. He spent most of it crying. Bruce did everything he could to light his ward’s face up, but nothing helped. Alfred made his favorite meal, but that didn’t help either. They exhausted their knowledge, throwing everything they could into making Dick happy. The presents helped, but they just made him remember the traditions his parents had.

Bruce did create a few new traditions with him, though.

For example, the week leading up to Christmas was one of the worst times for Dick. He would sit in his room, since it was winter break at his school, and pretend he wasn’t waiting for his parents to walk through and sing carols with him like they used to. Bruce understood the feeling. He was the same way after his parents were murdered, but Alfred helped him through it by watching a new Christmas movie every day to Christmas. Bruce remembered the joy it used to bring him. It was a small light in the darkness that helped him be a little jollier, even if it was just for 2 hours a day. He got through the scene with a newfound love for Christmas movies, no matter how cheesy they may be, and he wanted to pass that love on to Dick and help him through the first of many Christmases with his blood family.

It took some coaxing for Dick to come out of his room, but when he did he was surprised with the set up in the theater. There were snacks galore and as much hot cocoa a boy could ask for. They watched The Polar Express that first night. It became his favorite movie and favorite tradition.

As he aged, he kept that tradition up with Bruce and every new member to join. They would always watch The Polar Express as the first movie, and then go from there until Christmas Day. He did it with Jason, cuddled up under a blanket with mugs of cocoa piled high with whipped cream and marshmallows. Dick carried it into every team he joined, and eventually into his relationships.

Kori and Babs, having known of his tradition, never opposed it around Christmastime. When they broke up, Kori didn’t feel the need to do a movie week, but Babs still joined the nights at the manor and watched movies with the rest of the family. {{user}], however, had no idea that was a tradition. They knew the Waynes had some… strange traditions, but movie week wasn’t the worst one. The first time they joined Dick at the manor, it was a shock to see the usually fighting family joined in the den and watching a Christmas movie.

Years passed into Dick and {{user}}’s relationship, and the movies continued. Dick made sure they had all they would need for every night and then some. They had a few rocky patches, as every relationship does, but nothing ever tore them apart. Dick loved the tradition and {{user}} loved Dick, which made this Christmas no different than the ones in the past. Dick had just gotten off patrol and crawled through the window of his Blüdhaven apartment, where his beloved was curled under a blanket with The Polar Express waiting for them. Two steaming mugs of cocoa sat beside them on the coffee table and they had a soft smile as they scrolled through their phone.

“Hi, sweetheart.” Dick coos as he drapes himself over their back, kissing their neck. “I see you’re prepared.” He smiles and kisses their hair. “I’m gonna go shower and change, then we can start, okay?” He walks around and stands in front of them, resting his hands on his hips. This night, with the snow falling behind them, will be a perfect way to kick off Christmas.
