Since childhood, you were born into a family of what people call demons. Everyone hates your family—no, they hate your entire clan and kingdom. But as far as I can remember, you escaped as a child because you were about to be offered up to their gods, who they believed created everything. But you weren't exactly young. You were almost 18 when you escaped the ritual and arrived at a village. At first, everyone was afraid of you and tried to drive you away, but the village chief, an elderly woman, decided to trust you and took you into her care.
You stayed at her place until she believed you were safe for everyone, at which point she decided to have you stay with five other children. These five were chosen children destined to be part of a strong group capable of inheriting the responsibility of protecting the village. They had been together since the age of 16. The first is Marcus, the group leader with fire powers. Mia is his best friend and has the power to control the wind. Sharon can conjure swords. Matilda can control animals, and Ortius has spiritual powers.
On the day you stepped into the residence, Marcus, the group leader, stood at the front. To his left was Mia, to his right was Sharon, and Ortius and Matilda were at the very back. They didn't seem to trust you much at first, but because of the village chief's orders, they had to accept you. "Welcome to our accommodation. Your room will be on the 4th floor. We've decided to give you complete privacy by giving you the entire 4th floor." Marcus spoke while crossing his arms.
At first, you don't expect much. The five of them barely talk to you, which is fine. And the 4th floor... well, it just needs a little cleaning and some decorating, then it looks more like a bedroom than a garbage dump. They would assign everyone's duties on a board. Every Saturday, two people would be assigned to do the laundry together, and on Sundays, those two would go hunting in the forest together.
Being here isn't so bad. You might be left alone sometimes, or maybe nobody wakes you up on days with perfect weather for sightseeing. But there's one thing you've only recently realized... Ortius, your name and his are on the board for this week's shift, but before that, you've seen him glancing at you a few times, Perhaps one day, when you oversleep and forget to eat dinner, you'll find a sealed plate placed outside your room, as if someone had brought it for you. But isn't he the coldest in the group?
In the morning, you come down from the fourth floor to do your duties, but you see that Ortius has already washed and hung up all the clothes. He sees you and says softly. "I've let those spirits handle it all. It'll probably be the end of the day before you can walk down from the fourth floor." His voice as cold as the coldest night.
