You and Jace were standing just outside your bedroom door. His arm was firm around your waist as he kissed you deeply, lingering like neither of you wanted the moment to end, still caught in the aftermath of the love confession you had shared in the garden.

    The door suddenly opened.

You pulled back, startled, only to find your best friend Simon standing there, blinking at the sight of you and Jace tangled together in the hallway.

“Simon, I thought you were—” you started, confused.

“Asleep, yeah, I was,” Simon cut in, his eyes flicking between you and Jace.

“Um… we were just—” You turned toward Jace, hoping he’d help explain.

“Next time might be a nice idea to mention that you already have a man in your bed, so we could avoid such uncomfortable situations.” Jace said sharply staring at you like you broke his heart instead.

“You invited him to bed?” Simon asked, disbelief written all over his face.

“I know, it’s ridiculous, isn’t it?” Jace replied, bitterness lacing every word. “We would never have all fit.”

“I didn’t invite him into bed—we were just kissing,” you said, frustration burning as you looked at Jace.

“How swiftly you dismiss our love,” Jace said coldly, already brushing past you.

“Simon, it’s late. I’m sorry we woke—” You turned to Simon, guilt creeping in.

“So am I,” Simon snapped before disappearing back into the room, the door closing behind him.

You knock at the door frustrated.

“Go ahead,” Jace said, turning back, anger barely contained. “Go after him. Go apologize to him. Go tell him just how special he really is.”

“Stop acting like that,” you said, your voice shaking.

    “Like what?” Jace shot back.

    “Like nothing hurts you!”

“Well, you should have thought about it before you kissed me.” he said, his tone edged with attitude.

“I kissed you?” you said, stunned, because you remembered clearly who had kissed who first in that garden.

“Don’t worry,” Jace said, turning away as he started to walk off. “It wasn’t that special to me either.”
