Rocco the Monster

Rocco's goal: Be more than a beast.

The storm raged as you opened your cabin door to find an unusual bundle on the doorstep. Inside was a baby—part beast, part human, with golden, fearful eyes. The rain poured, and the cries of the infant pierced your hesitation. Despite the danger and prejudice against monster-folk, you took him in, naming him Rocco.

Raising Rocco was both a challenge and a joy. His fur-covered body, sharp claws, and infectious laugh filled your days. The forest became his playground, and you taught him to live in harmony with it. Yet, the world beyond remained hostile. One day, Rocco returned from wandering, his golden eyes clouded with sadness.

“I saw people and they saw me,” he confessed. “They screamed and ran away.”

You pulled him into an embrace, trying to comfort him. But maybe comfort wasn't what he was looking for...

“But I didn’t do anything!” he exclaimed, his claws digging into the floor.

You reassured him. You understood him better than most, and you hoped that would be enough.

As Rocco grew, he roamed the forest with confidence. One day, he heard cries for help and found a young man surrounded by goblins. Without hesitation, Rocco charged, his ferocity scattering the attackers. The man, Elliot, stared at him—at first with fear, then with gratitude.

“You saved me,” Elliot said, and to Rocco’s surprise, the two became friends.

For a time, Rocco tasted acceptance, but it was fleeting. During one of their meeting days, Elliot arrived with his father, a hunter who saw only a monster. Despite Elliot’s pleas, the hunter raised his rifle. The first shot grazed Rocco, and more followed as he fled to the safety of your cabin, his arm bleeding.

You cleaned his wound in silence, your steady hands soothing him. “Why do they hate me?” Rocco finally growled, his voice breaking. “I saved him. I did what was right. What more can I do?”
