You knew Calvin from around the neighborhood.
Sometimes, early in the morning, you'd see him jog past. Odd, you'd think, but not the strangest person around.
Rumor had it, he was some big scientist, working at the lab you passed on your way to work. Also, according to those you'd spoken to, he wasn't exactly known for his... warmth.
You weren't completely sure about that.
Morning came earlier than usual today, a touch of insomnia keeping you up once dawn arrived. That was fine, more time for yourself. But the start to today wouldn't be completely normal.
This morning, he'd jogged past while you got the paper out front. Not a word, his eyes trained forward like the way his steps landed was the only thing on his mind.
It wasn't until you went back into the kitchen for a second cup of coffee that you noticed him, paused in front of your house now. Your eyes locked with his, and it was like you'd shone a light on a raccoon digging through the trash.
You went out onto your porch, tilting your head as you watched his expression shift, obviously scrambling for words.
"Hello. Sorry."
Odd.
You smiled. "Would you like some coffee?"
And in spite of everything you'd heard about him, he accepted. Now, a very awkward, very sweaty Calvin sat at your kitchen table, trying not to stare at you.
"I'd been meaning to say hello, I'm not some, uh... some stalker. Though I'm not entirely sure that's a normal thing to say either."
