You had been married to Adrian Keller for a little over three years. You met him on a rainy evening at a crowded coffee shop. The only empty seat was across from him, and when you asked if you could sit there, he smiled and said he didn’t mind. What started as small talk turned into hours of conversation. Adrian was charming, ambitious, and full of plans for the business he was building. Within two years, you were married. For a while things were good. Busy, but good. You believed in him and supported the long hours he spent growing his company. Then one night at his parents’ house during Sunday dinner, everything shifted. Halfway through the meal Adrian leaned back in his chair and said,
“I think people should be able to stay friends with their exes. It shouldn’t be a problem unless someone’s insecure.”
The table went quiet. His mother, Elaine, tried to gently disagree, but it quickly turned into an argument that left the whole night tense. A week later Samantha Blake, his ex, started texting him. At first it seemed harmless. Then the messages became constant. Late-night notifications. Hearts in conversations he didn’t try to hide. When you brought it up, Adrian sighed.
“You’re being insecure.”
Soon Samantha wasn’t just texting him. She was meeting him for lunch. One afternoon Adrian came home smelling strongly of her perfume. After that she started showing up at the house. Sometimes you’d come home early from work and find her sitting in the living room like she belonged there.
“She just needs a friend after her divorce,” Adrian would say.
That was when something finally clicked. If he could reconnect with his ex, then so could you. You reached out to Daniel Hayes. Daniel had been the relationship before Adrian. The one that ended because he had to move overseas when his business suddenly took off. The breakup had been calm, more about timing than anything else. Now his company was thriving, and he traveled back often. The first time you saw him again was for coffee. It felt easy. Familiar. Soon coffee turned into dinners and long walks. You secretly loved those evenings. One night you came home after seeing him, his cologne still faintly on your coat. Adrian noticed immediately.
“Where were you?” he asked.
“Out.”
“With who?”
You hesitated before answering.“Daniel.”
The argument exploded.
“That’s completely different,” Adrian snapped.
“How?”
“You know how serious things were between you two.”
You laughed quietly.“Exactly.”
A few days later you discovered something worse. Samantha had a spare key to your house. When you confronted Adrian, he shrugged.“It’s just in case.”
Your birthday arrived soon after. Adrian had made reservations at Maison Aurelia, one of the hardest restaurants in the city to get into. You spent extra time getting ready, hoping the night might feel normal again. Then you arrived. When you arrived, though, Samantha was already sitting at the table. Your chest tightened. Adrian acted like it was normal. You pulled out your phone under the table and texted him.
He didn’t respond. Dinner was painfully awkward. Samantha talked nonstop about a vacation she had taken to Mexico with Adrian. The beaches, the drinks, the resort, the sunsets. She laughed about how unforgettable the trip had been. You barely spoke. Instead you sat beside Daniel, slowly twisting the wedding ring on your finger. The metal felt heavy, like it didn’t belong to you anymore, like it was burning. Then suddenly, a warm hand settled gently onto your thigh under the table. You froze. Daniel leaned back slightly in his chair as Samantha finished talking.
“Oh, that reminds me,” he said casually. “That trip we took through Europe.”
Both Adrian and Samantha looked up. Daniel glanced at you with a small smile.“Remember? Paris first. Then Italy. Then Monaco.”He paused.“By the time we finished hopping cities, that trip had cost close to a million dollars.”
The table went silent. Samantha’s smile faded. Adrian’s expression tightened. You leaned back slightly, remembering late nights walking through Paris and quiet mornings.
