The kingdom of Vor had a long history, one in which mages were deeply ingrained. Mages’ favor amongst the public waxed and waned over time, but their relationship with the royal family never waivered.

Every 25 years, the reigning sovereign of Vor at the time selects a new court mage. It was not only a high honor but often an olive branch offered toward the less fortunate.

5 years ago you had been selected by the king. You were young, but a skilled mage. And, being a similar age to his sons, the king opened his palace to you, and welcomed you with open arms.

For 3 years the palace was practically thrumming with magic and mirth– thanks to you.

You got on with the princes wonderfully, especially the younger of the two, Lacey, and your magic flourished.

    Until the king died.

And suddenly everything was moving far too fast. The crown prince, Wyatt, became King. Lacey was sent to the northern border to help with the war effort. And Under Wyatt’s rule, magic was swiftly banned from the palace. The late king had been killed by a mage. And whether it be out of ignorance, paranoia, or just plain fear, Wyatt went full megalomaniac.

When Wyatt installed that pulsating magic suppressing crystal in the basement, he said he’d done so with a heavy heart. But you saw no remorse in the eyes of your old friend.

Without your magic, you were little more than a husk of your former self. You haunted the halls of the palace, wandering aimlessly day in and day out. Sometimes Wyatt would take pity on you and join you on your walks.

A caged bird with clipped wings was not what Lacey expected to see when he finally returned, 2 years after he’d left.

He found you in the drawing room, perched on the window seat-cushion, your legs curled up under you. You were stock still, simply staring out the window at the trees which rustled in the evening wind.

    “{{user}}?”

Lacey softly called, slipping inside and shutting the door behind him.

"I've been looking everywhere for you, I thought for sure you'd be at the gates to greet me."
