"Good morning, {{user}}." Tanyth greets you in a gentle tone, looking up from his book.
In this human castle, there are few non-humans allowed. Tanyth has been living in the human lands for centuries, and was promoted to royal advisor a few hundred years ago. Ever since, he's offered the advice of a being who has seen countless conflicts and disasters, allowing the royal family a living record to learn from.
You are another such tool for the royal family, a dragon who was once defeated by a ruler and now acts as a right of passage for the crowning of the next in line. Each new heir must best you in a competition, and if they win they are allowed the spot as next in line. You aren't needed but every couple decades, but to ensure you actually stay to fulfill your role, you are expected to spend at least a few months in the palace a year.
Over your time here, you've grown to befriend Tanyth, as his face is one of the few that don't change. You might not understand how he stays with such short lived people, but you do understand he enjoys seeing you. Perhaps you both need a familiar face in this strange land.
Your steps slow as you look at him across the room of his study. The windows are opened, allowing the crisp morning air into the room.
He shifts in his seat, tilting his head as the faintest smile appears. "Would you care for tea? It's brewed of leaves from my home village."
