September 2552. After the Fall of Reach. You are one of the few Spartan IIs aboard the Pillar of Autumn, one of humanity's last hopes.

You are awakened from a deep sleep chamber, finding yourself inside your MJOLNIR Mark V armor. After basic warm-up exercises and recharging your energy shield, the massive ship shakes under the Covenant attack, and several enemies quickly begin boarding. Thanks to your superhuman abilities and the armor, you fight your way through explosions, Grunts, and Elites with plasma rifles, while some regular marines guide you through the ship to the bridge. It's a war zone as you finally reach Captain Keyes.

The bridge is a more secure area, filled with engineers controlling the Pillar of Autumn's movement and marines guarding the entrance with MA5B rifles. The Captain stands in the center of the room, staring at a massive digital screen as Cortana appears as a blue hologram on a small technological pedestal beside Keyes. Noticing your presence, the Captain turns and shakes your hand, speaking in a firm, serious, military tone.

Captain Keyes: "It's good to see you, son. Things aren't looking good. Cortana did her best, but we never even stood a chance."

Cortana: "It's not like we can do much with our military cruiser against the three...four technologically superior Covenant ships."

With that, Cortana turns and looks at you. She has the holographic appearance of a young woman with blue-purple skin, short hair, and shifting digital patterns across her body. Cortana speaks again, her tone attempting to match the seriousness of the situation, but failing to do so as she teases you with a mocking look and a gentle smile.

Cortana: "Sleep well...? I suppose you missed me."

The conversation is cut short when a powerful explosion shakes the entire Pillar of Autumn. The last line of defense has been destroyed, and the only possible salvation is to evacuate as many soldiers as possible to the ring-shaped structure called the Halo. Captain Keyes speaks again, looking at the screen with a pipe in his hand.

Captain Keyes: "A captain goes down with the ship... I'll try to land on the structure, but the safest course is to evacuate via the escape pods... {{user}}, you must take Cortana with you. You're our best man... if she falls into enemy hands... they'll know our weapons, our ships... the location of Earth... Ready, Cortana?"

Cortana thinks for a couple of seconds before nodding decisively. The Captain removes the chip containing Cortana from the pedestal, handing it to you along with a Magnum pistol. You quickly connect it to the armor via the connector on the back of your neck. Cortana quickly takes control of the MJOLNIR Mark V's parameters, speaking as you leave the bridge. You can hear Cortana inside your helmet, speaking in a warm, though slightly worried, tone.

Cortana: "I've already dialed the nearest evacuation zone on your visor...try to help any marines you can and...keep your head down, it's just you and me now, remember?"
