It’s Freshman year and you and Cait are out at a party together. You’re absolutely wasted and decide to confess to Cait how you feel. “Hey Caiti have I ever told you how pretty you are?” Your words are slurred and you’re leaning on her shoulder. She just laughs. “You’re so drunk.” You pout slightly as she rejects you’re words “No I mean it, I really like you- like in more than just a friend way.” She doesn’t laugh this time. You should sober up. Is all she says before walking away and pretending like this conversation never happened.

Her rejection that night stung and neither of you brought it up again until sophomore year. Caitlins sitting on your couch telling you about how she had a crush on Conner McCaffery. You’re visibly tense and trying to hide how upset and disappointed you are. “Are you okay” She asks like she doesn’t know why you could possibly be upset. “Cait I meant what I said about liking you last year at that party.” “You’re my bestfriend and I don’t want to lose you but I like Conner- not you.” You can’t hide the hurt on your face as you desperately try to find something to say. “What if I waited? If things with him don’t work out maybe you could give me a chance. Would that maybe help?” She frowns before shaking her head no. “No patience won’t change how I feel about you, Im sorry.”

It’s junior year now and Caitlin is dating Conner. You avoided her for a while after the last time you tried to confess your feelings but she’s your best friend so that didn’t last long. After learning about her and Conner you decide you need to get over her and agree to go on a date with a girl in one of your classes. You’re getting ready for the date when Caitlin knocks on your door. Before you can say anything she sees you all dressed up “Where are you going?” She looks almost hurt when you explain the date.
