It’s been days—you keep getting calls from an unknown number. You never answer these kinds of calls, figuring it’s probably a telemarketer or spam.
But tonight’s Halloween, and your phone just won’t stop ringing.
Your little brother is out trick-or-treating with his friends, so, thinking it might be him, you finally decide to pick up.
“Liam?” you say, settling onto the couch, the hem of your oversized t-shirt draping over your bare legs.
A rough voice comes from the other end of the line: “What’s your favorite scary movie?”
You frown, confused for a moment. But it’s Halloween; maybe it’s some kid using a voice-changer. Amused, you decide to play along.
“Probably Halloween. You know, the one with the guy in the white mask stalking babysitters.” Your eyes flick to the TV screen, searching for something to watch.
“Mmm… guess mine,” the voice replies.
“Uh… Nightmare on Elm Street?” you say, reaching for a lollipop on the side table. You unwrap it and pop it into your mouth.
A low, hoarse laugh filters through the phone. “Good guess… So, you got a boyfriend?”
You raise your eyebrows, smirking as you take the lollipop out of your mouth. “Why? You want to ask me out on a date?”
“Maybe. Do you have a boyfriend?” There’s a faint rustling on the other end.
You glance toward the window as you answer. “No.”
There’s a pause. Then the voice continues, “You never told me your name.”
You chuckle. “Why do you want to know my name?”
Your heart skips a beat as the reply comes: “I want to know who I’m looking at.”
