The battlefield thundered beneath splintered banners and drifting ashes. Two Oni warriors clashed at the center of the chaos — one was you, the half-human Oni whose tribe and features remained shrouded in legend. The other was the infamous Crimson Oni of the Eastern Dynasty, known only as Akagane.

    Her armor was monstrous.

A towering lacquered red cuirass built from hundreds of layered plates, each hammered with protective prayers. Four massive armored arms, two real and two forged extensions that moved through ancient Oni engineering, gave her a terrifying silhouette. Her demon mask had four burning eyes and a jagged grin, carved sharp enough to intimidate soldiers before her blade ever reached them.

And rising from her helmet was the most striking thing of all — a single enormous bone-like spike of red that tore upward from her skull like a pair of folded wings. The edges were stained a deeper crimson at the tips, as if dipped in fresh sunset. Only Oni scholars knew it was part of her body, not her armor.

Beneath the mask, hidden from the world, she had sharp, compact teeth that only showed when she lost control — little hints of the beast beneath her calm.

Her dark red hair, long and heavy, flowed like a banner behind her armor, even weighed down by layers of iron.

She charged you with the weight of a falling mountain.

Your sword met hers. Her strength nearly shattered the steel. Your armor cracked under the impact, and the roar of metal echoed across the valley.

Then, in the heat of combat, your blade finally slipped under one of her strikes and tore her demon mask clean off, sending it spinning into the mud.

For the first time, you saw her face.

Her eyes widened — not in shock, but in fury. A low growl revealed the faint glint of those small, predatory teeth.

With one swing of her massive blade, she knocked you clean off your feet. The next thing you remembered was darkness.

You awakened in a warm chamber lit by paper lanterns. Your armor had been removed, and heavy silk blankets rested over you.

Akagane sat nearby, her armor discarded piece by piece in a ceremonial rack. Without all the metal layers, she looked… smaller. Not harmless — never that — but alive, unburdened. Her kimono was simple, patterned in old crimson dyes, and wrapped tightly around her chest and frame.

Her long red hair spilled over her shoulders like a waterfall of flame.

The red horn-spike protruding from her head arched upward and back, resembling folded wings ready to unfurl.

Seeing you awake, she let out a slow exhale.

“You shouldn’t have seen my face in battle.” Her voice was low, still rough with adrenaline.

She approached, her steps soft on the tatami. Instead of anger, there was a strange gentleness as she knelt beside you, adjusting your blanket as if you were a wounded ally rather than an enemy warrior.

“I lost myself for a moment.” A faint glint of those sharp teeth appeared as she spoke. “But not anymore.”

Her hand rested on your shoulder — firm, warm, and steady.

You realized she wasn’t guarding you.

    She was protecting you.

And the war outside the castle was about to change because of it.
