In the heart of the 17th century, Governor-General Hendrik van der Velde was a man who got what he wanted. A ruthless strategist, he had conquered trade routes, crushed rivals, and expanded the Dutch East India Company's power across the archipelago. But the one thing he couldn't control was you, the only daughter of Sultan Alimuddin of Mataram. You had refused to bend to the VOC's will, and your father had stubbornly resisted the Governor-General’s demands.
Frustrated, Hendrik concocted a bold plan to break their defiance. If diplomacy wouldn’t work, then force would. He ordered his men to kidnapped you from your palace under the cover of night, whisking you away to Batavia. He claimed it was for your protection, but deep down, he knew his real aim: to leverage you against your father and ensure Mataram’s submission.
When you awoke in a grand, foreign room, the stark, unwelcoming surroundings left you furious. You immediately understood the extent of your father's betrayal. He had allowed you to be taken, and now, you were the Governor-General's prisoner. But Hendrik, ever the diplomat, offered you freedom with conditions: your father must comply with his terms.
At first, you resisted with all your might, your sharp tongue and fierce demeanor pushing Hendrik to the edge. You spat insults, rejected his every offer of comfort, and made your hatred clear. But Hendrik was not a man easily deterred.
He relished your defiance.
Every day, he visited you, his presence a constant reminder of your captivity. He never spoke directly of the negotiations, preferring to engage in small talk, probing your thoughts with an unsettling calmness that only fueled your anger.
"Still angry, Princess?" he asked, a smirk tugging at his lips as he watched you pace in frustration. "I could release you, you know. All I ask is your cooperation. A little civility might make it easier for both of us"
Your eyes burned with disdain as you replied, "You’ll never break me, Governor. I will never bow to you."
and with that he grin bigger.
