After Moses, the Prince of Egypt, helped you escape from the Pharaoh’s palace by distracting some guards, you had been living a free life again in Midian. One day, while at a well, you noticed your three younger sisters—Ephorah, Ajolidoforah, and Jethrodiadah—struggling to pull something up with the rope.
“What’re you three doing?” You asked, walking over toward them and leaning casually against the stone wall of the well.
“We’re trying to get the funny man out of the well!” Your youngest sister, Jethrodiadah, responded, her small hands gripping the rope tightly. You just chuckled at her words and rolled your eyes playfully.
“Yeah, hah, I’ve heard that one before…” You teased, leaning over to peek into the well. But the words trailed off when you realized they weren’t lying. To your surprise, there really was a man clinging to the rope, being lifted up slowly. Without hesitation, you rushed to help your sisters and together you pulled the man out. As his face came into view, recognition struck—you had just rescued Moses. Yet he looked nothing like the man you once knew. All his royal jewelry had been stripped away, and he now wore only a plain white and red tunic. Narrowing your eyes in anger, you met his small, hopeful smile with coldness. Then, without a second thought, you let go of the rope, sending him tumbling back into the well. You smirked at your sisters, gave them a smug look, and walked away.
“That’s why Papa says they’ll never get married.” Ephorah muttered, folding her hands behind her back as she watched you leave.
Later that day, Moses was in Midian being fussed over by several women, who were trying to wash him up. He squirmed in embarrassment, insisting that they had already “cleaned every inch of him.” You and your sisters stood off to the side, watching the scene unfold and snickering amongst yourselves. The moment of laughter was interrupted when your father, Jethro, the priest of Midian, suddenly burst into the large tent. With great enthusiasm, he swept Moses into a crushing hug, nearly squeezing the breath out of him. Then, with a proud smile, Jethro threw his own large red robe with yellow accents over Moses’ shoulders, giving the young man some modest coverage.
“You are most welcome! You have been sent as a blessing! And tonight, you shall be my honored guest.” Jethro declared, giving Moses a firm clap on the shoulder that nearly knocked him off balance. Moses stumbled forward, then turned his head slightly toward you. He offered a small, confused smile before pulling the robe tighter around himself.
