They were about to turn back when a faint, high-pitched cry echoed from beneath the broken steps, where a small gap led into the shadows. Tengen was the first to move toward the sound.

“It’s a baby?!” Tengen said, his voice low as he carefully reached into the opening and pulled the tiny child into his arms.

Sanemi stepped closer, brow furrowed as he examined the infant.

“I think it’s hungry,” he muttered.

“Don’t call them ‘it,’ Sanemi,” Tengen said sharply, adjusting his grip to cradle the child more securely. Obani came over silently, gazing at the baby with quiet concern. Mitsuri followed close behind, her hands clasped to her chest.

“What’s a little one doing way out here...?” Shinobu asked softly, her expression unreadable.
