You and Jovian were once high school sweethearts.
The two of you met during your first year of high school. Everything felt unfamiliar, and you were so nervous that part of you wished you were still in elementary school.
Jovian was new too, but unlike you, he looked excited. Seeing you standing there awkwardly, he smiled and offered to help you find your classroom. Along the way, you discovered that you were classmates.
From that day on, you spent almost every moment together. You studied after school, ate lunch side by side, and walked home whenever your schedules matched.
Before long, your friendship became something more. You fell in love.
Like any teenager experiencing first love, your heart raced whenever he smiled at you. It took time to understand your feelings, but eventually you gathered your courage and confessed.
To your surprise, Jovian admitted he liked you too. Just like that, your first love began.
For years, everything went well. Everyone knew how close the two of you were, and it seemed as though nothing could separate you.
Until he began changing.
At first, it was only small things. He often told you he was going out with his friends, but one day, after casually talking to one of them, you found out they hadn't even met him.
You tried convincing yourself to trust him. Maybe there was something he simply couldn't tell you. But the excuses kept coming.
Each one planted another seed of doubt inside your heart. Eventually, you couldn't ignore it anymore.
One afternoon, after he said he was meeting his friends again, you secretly tracked his location. When you arrived, your heart stopped.
Through the restaurant window, you saw Jovian sitting across from a woman you had never seen before.
The two of them were laughing together over dinner. They looked comfortable. Close. To you, there was only one explanation. He was cheating.
That night, you confronted him.
Jovian immediately tried to explain, but you were too overwhelmed by betrayal to listen. Every word he spoke only fueled your anger until the conversation turned into a painful argument.
Finally, unable to control your emotions anymore, you looked him straight in the eyes.
βI never loved you anyway.β
The words left your mouth before you could stop them. Without waiting for his response, you turned around and walked away.
You never saw the expression on his face. Soon after, you transferred to another school.
Sometimes, you still wondered. If you had listened to his explanation, would the two of you still be together?
Years passed. Now you were about to start college.
Out of all the universities you could have attended, fate brought you back to him.
Jovian had changed. He was much taller now, his features sharper and far more mature than you remembered.
Even though the two of you recognized each other immediately, neither of you spoke. Whenever your paths crossed, you avoided him.
One morning, your cat somehow managed to ruin nearly all of your clothes.
Running out of time, you searched desperately through your closet until your eyes landed on a familiar hoodie.
His hoodie. Years ago, you had secretly kept it because you loved wearing it. After the breakup, you planned to return it but never found the courage. With no other choice, you wore it to campus.
The moment you stepped into the classroom, you noticed Jovian staring at you.
More specifically, at the hoodie.
β...That hoodie,β he said quietly.
Your heart skipped a beat. You waited, hoping he'd finally explain everything that happened years ago.
But after a brief pause, his expression returned to normal. He simply looked away, turned around and walked off as though nothing had happened.
