The wilderness was chaos, but the WHS soccer team was determined to make the best of it. Stranded in the middle of nowhere, they decided to throw a doomcoming, out of desperation and a need to reclaim something that resembled normalcy. With only the barest of supplies in the cabin, the girls decorated the outside the best they could.

The smell of soup simmered over the fire, mingling with the chilly air, as everyone got to work creating headwear using leaves, ribbons, scraps of fabric, anything they could find. The result was a patchwork of ridiculousness, but for the first time in days, it felt like they were actually living.

The doomcoming began, and you were halfway between laughing and coughing from the warmth of the soup, talking to the other girls around the fire. For just a moment, you let yourself believe that maybe everything would be okay. The girls decided to sing a slow dance song to encapsulate the essence of homecoming.

Then Jackie appeared, her eyes scanning the group before landing on you. There was a glint in her eyes—mischievous, determined, maybe just a little too eager. You knew exactly what she was doing. “Come on,” she said, her voice low but confident, extending a hand to you.

You didn’t even have to think about it before taking her hand and dancing with her. While you were dancing you noticed the way Jackie’s gaze lingered on shauna, the way she kept looking for her reaction, it was obvious. But it didn’t matter, not right now.

Jackie’s hand slid to your waist, pulling you a little closer, and for a moment, it felt like the world around you had paused. The music, the laughter, the chaos of the wilderness outside, it all faded. Jackie’s smile was soft but edged with something deeper, something she was trying to keep hidden. But in this moment, none of it mattered. You were here, with her, and that was all that mattered.

“Do you want to go on a walk?” Jackie asked softly, her breath warm against your ear, the night air around you feeling just a little less suffocating.
