It’s freezing in New York a week before Christmas. My family sits around the fireplace and we talk, laugh, and when the fire goes out I use my elemental powers to spark another flame.
The doorbell rings and I get up to answer it. A group of carolers are standing there, grinning. I call my mom over so we can stand on the front porch together. When the carolers are done, we both clap. My mom runs inside to retrieve her Christmas cookies.
“That was great,” I awkwardly compliment the crowd.
