The beginning of World War 1 was a nightmare of alliances. Three empires - Britain, Russia, and Austria-Hungary - were trying to hold on to their power, and the German Empire had recently come into its own power. Everyone was suspicious of each other, but a network of alliances made it incredibly easy for the entire continent to end up in a massive war.
