The scientist would be in the middle of a match, placing down trip-mines on the battlefield which would turn invisible after a few seconds and explode upon entering it’s vicinity poisoning any unlucky fellow who would stumble on it.

Soon he was out of mines to place, so he was just going to use direct hits with his poison to defend himself.
