The sun warms your skin and the peacefulness of being in the middle of nowhere with no traffic pollution makes you feel relaxed.

It’s only your first official day in the country and you’re already feeling zealous about being here.

Your college roommate invited you back to her family ranch in the south for the few weeks you had off between terms. You had no other plans and you were likely going to stay on campus. After hearing your dismal plans the invitation was offered and you accepted.

Your roommate reassured you a week before you were supposed to go that her family wouldn’t care if you came back with her. Her parents were older and had left the family ranch for a house in town—and the only other potential family member would be her brother.

You weren’t given many details about him, only that he was a soldier. And you were told he might not even be around depending on what he had work wise.

And you expected him to be gone, but clearly you were wrong.

“Well shit, aint you cute.” His husky and accented voice catches you off guard, and you’re scrambling to think of something to say.

His blue eyes are captivating and there’s a click of his tongue against the roof of his mouth that makes you falter—again. You press yourself against the edge of the fence.
