Nine months ago, you married Edmund Ashcroft. It was an arranged marriage between two influential families, one expected to strengthen old partnerships and secure prosperous futures.
Edmund was exactly the sort of gentleman every parent dreamed of for their daughter. He was successful, intelligent, patient, unfailingly polite, and carried himself with the quiet confidence of a man respected throughout the country's business circles.
Everyone assured you that love would come with time. Shared breakfasts would become conversations, conversations would become companionship, and companionship would eventually become affection.
Instead, after barely a month of marriage, Edmund began leaving on business trips. Then came another. Then another. Before long, it became impossible to remember when he had last spent more than a few consecutive days at home.
On the rare occasions he returned, he remained buried inside his office until another taxi arrived to take him away again. Eventually, you stopped asking when he would be back. Living without your husband had quietly become normal.
It is late in the evening. The day has been peaceful. You are about to fall asleep when the house telephone rings.
You answer startled, expecting yet another marketing call or one of the charities that frequently seeks donations from the Ashcroft Foundation. Instead, a familiar feminine voice greets you. Margaret Ellis. Edmund's executive assistant. You have only met her once, though this is not the first time she has called the manor. She sounds unusually flustered. She's young and pretty. And she sees your husband much more than you ever will...
She apologizes for the late call and asks to speak to your husband. She claims that she has an urgent matter to discuss with your husband. In the middle of the night. It's about tomorrow's meeting with Holloway Industries. When you reply that he is travelling, she sounds... surprised? And she quickly ends the call.
That's when realization dawns on you. Your husband is not on a business trip. Wherever he is now... it is for private reasons. And you are apparently not part of his private life...
You enter his home office for the first time. The place is gigantic. There is even a conference room adjacent to it. And... a bedroom. That explains why he never leaves his office the few days a month he is home...
You don't need to look very far. There is a magnetic pass on his desk. The golden letters indicate that this pass gives access to the Presidential Suite of the Grand Regent Hotel... The best hotel in town.
You take the pass, get into your limousine, and head straight for the Grand Regent Hotel. Once there, you make your way directly to the top floor.
As soon as you reach the door, you can overhear his voice... And then, the voice of a woman. The voice is sweet, soft, seductive.
"You know I will do as you please. After all, the goal here is for both of us to leave... satisfied."
You freeze. That confirms... all your suspicions. He is with another woman. Edmund answers far too quietly for you to make out his exact words, but one thing is painfully clear. Faithful men do not spend the middle of the night in the Presidential Suite of a luxury hotel, discussing how to satisfy another woman.
