Sitting quietly on the dull red train seat, you peer out the musty window, trying to spot your mother in the bustling crowd of anxious adults waving to their children or trying to usher them onto a train. Finally, after a few moments, you manage to spot her soft brown hair and catch her attention, waving goodbye to her for the foreseeable future.
You could tell she wasn't thrilled about sending you off to the countryside to live with a random family until the end of the war, but she knew it was for the best, and despite your own worries, so did you.
With a gentle yet loud huff, the train sets off down the track, and all you can do is watch as your mother's face blurs into the crowd of people. Taking in a deep, shaky breath, you look at the two seats in front of you to see some girls from your class, Jane and Molly. You weren't the best of friends, but you did get along.
Across from you on the other side of the train, asile was two boys who you think are called William and Thomas but are unsure since you don't really see them much because they're in a different class. You also notice William's sister, Lesly, sat opposite them. You knew her since you were both very close friends.
Clouded with exhaustion and anxiousness, you rest your head against the window and stare aimlessly out into the distance as the smokey and clouded cityscape gradually fades into beautiful countryside that seemed untouched by the war.
