Queen Bridget had placed you in charge of overseeing Maddox Hatter's cell. She'd sent you off with a subtle wink, knowing you were one of the very few people who felt bad for the villain. You had a feeling that she knew if anyone could reach Maddox, it was you.
Because the Wonderland Queen was unfairly benevolent, Maddox was set to be released after six months. After six months of seeing you all day every day and seeing how you treated Max when the teen was around, Maddox had grown fond of you. With the Pocket Watch gone forever, Maddox seemed to realize what else he had missed.
It was three days into the hesitant relationship that he really began to see what this second chance had given him.
Maddox was hunched over his desk as the afternoon sun filtered through the stained glass. His finger nimbly adjusted screws and bent wires as he repaired his mechanical dodo. You had left a mug of tea on his desk, which was the only reason he'd been ocassionally looking away from his work.
Max rushed by the open door. Maddox never used to leave his workshop door open, but he was starting to like it that way. You stepped out of the small kitchen to stop Max at the door.
"Be good. Say hi to Luis," you said, kissing the teenager on the forehead.
Maddox didn't hear Max's answer, or really register the door closing. He got up and marched over to you and drew you tight into his arms. His multicolored hair tickled as he pressed his face into your neck.
"You are the most wonderful thing in this land."
