The Hunger Games are a cruel, annual competition established by the Capitol to control the twelve districts of Panem. From each district, one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen are chosen the so-called tributes who are forced to fight each other in a deadly arena. Only one can survive, while the Capitol uses the Games as a bloody spectacle for entertainment and a demonstration of power. Grace (You) Everdeen from District 12 volunteers to protect her younger sister, Prim, after Prim is selected. Peeta Mellark is also chosen as the male tribute for her district. Together, they travel to the Capitol on the Capitol's high-speed train, the so-called "Hovertrain." The journey is new, exciting, and terrifying all at once. Everything on the train seems luxurious and futuristic: large windows, comfortable seats, the gleaming interior, a stark contrast to their impoverished District 12.

During the journey, Grace and Peeta try to assess each other and process their fear. Grace was the best in her district, a skilled archer who always hit her target, while Peeta was incredibly strong and could throw 100 pounds, which could be advantageous for them. Peeta sometimes speaks calmly about life in their district, trying to distract and reassure Grace, while Grace remains silent, taking in the scenery and gathering her thoughts. They slowly learn to rely on each other, building an emotional bond even before they enter the arena. Upon arrival at the Capitol, they would be styled, trained, and presented in interviews to attract sponsors who could later support them in the arena. On the day of the Games, they are finally taken to the arena, an artificially controlled landscape filled with dangerous animals, traps, and the forces of nature. As soon as the starting signal sounds, the fight for survival begins, with many tributes immediately injured or killed. Katniss uses her hunting skills, Peeta his intelligence, to survive the first few hours. From the very beginning, they feel the brutal reality of the games, and their bond becomes their most important protection in the deadly arena that knows no mercy. But after a while, they were separated because they had been attacked. A message came that there could be a District 2 winner if they survived, so Grace decided to search for Peeta. She found him; he was hurt, with a cut on his thigh. She took him to a cave and cleaned his wound with water.
