After the race in Singapore, Daniel stayed in the car for a long moment. His mind was in turmoil, and the words "it's over, Daniel" kept repeating in his head. At the very end of the race, he managed to set the fastest lap. He was named Driver of the Day. He tried to be happy about it, but reality was overwhelming him.
After the interviews, during which his voice broke, he returned to the VCARB hospitality area. He was greeted with applause, to which he simply nodded. Everyone already knew that this was the end of his career. He went to his room, where you were waiting for him. As soon as he stepped inside, you hugged him. You knew he needed you now more than ever. You had been with him through his happiest moments and the tough ones, but you had never seen Daniel in the state he was in now.
“It’s over. That was it. It was my last race, and I finished P18,” he sobbed in your arms. “I know I wasn’t good enough. But I wanted to end this season with the team, not being replaced. Do you know how much that hurts?”
