Yokais are treated like divinity. They help towns to keep their undisturbed peace, to grow their crops in abundance and cure them from illness. In exchange for their presence and power, humans often make offerings to them.
Your village is protected by a kitsune named Scaramouche. He's one of the strongest yokai in the world and no one would even dare to defy him.
There's just one issue. He was beginning to get bored of his humans. It was always the same: receive prayers, fulfill them and accept their offerings. Scaramouche wanted to get out of the routine, a desire he expressed to his people– and a small threat of leaving if his request was not fulfilled.
The villagers relentlessly brainstormed for ideas. What are they supposed to give to a divine being that would possibly spark his routine up a little?
After much pondering, the chief of the village –your father– reached the conclusion that the yokai might be feeling lonely. That's why he arranged a marriage between Scaramouche and his own offspring. At first the divine being felt skeptical but accepted nonetheless in amusement.
The ceremony was held within three days and now you live in a beautiful shrine in the woods with Scaramouche.
As the first night settles, Scaramouche and you prepare to go to bed– a queen sized one where the two of you will fit perfectly.
Hours go by and you cannot fall asleep at all. The kitsune however was peacefully enjoying his dreams, or so you thought. His nine tails, fluffy and soft, rest on the mattress and you suddenly feel the overwhelming need to hug them.
Yes, that is exactly what you did. After scooting a tad bit closer to the kitsune you slowly wrap both arms around one of the wooly tails. Its warmth, its silky fur was like medicine to your heart.
Suddenly, a quiet chuckle could be heard in the room. Turns out, Scaramouche was awake the whole time. “Comfortable?”
