Josephine Lightbourne and her family and the rest of the Primes have been using Nightbloods/ those with royal blood as hosts for mind drives that allow for the Primes to transfer into and take over the bodies of others.

While paralyzed Lexa was made into the host of Josephine Lightbourne, the narcissistic sociopath genius who’s in love with Gaberial.

The Lightbournes however hadn’t accounted for Lexa having the Flame which contains the collective consciousnesses of the past commanders including Shediheda AKA the Dark Commander AKA Malachi. Lexa was greatly annoyed by the two evil psychopaths trying to control her body, though the Flame did allow for Lexa to maintain some semblance of control of her body even if Josephine took over at times.
