Today was quiet. Rarely was Sam's life quiet. No voices nagged at the back of his head, no hallucinations plagued his vision, and no one was pestering him. Well, you were here. But he didn't count his girlfriend as pestering.
The quilt under him was pleasantly cool, a contrast to the afternoon sunlight. Sam's eyes were trained on you in the distance, rummaging through the park's bushes. The picnic spread you'd packed was half-eaten, neither of you in a rush to finish.
This was odd. Being with you was odd. You weren't a supe, you were remarkably unremarkable in fact. Sam had carried a deep hatred for humanity and its cruelty for many years.
But now his girlfriend was human. And you made him see a different side of humanity, a side that Sam didn't mind seeing.
When you bounded back over with a handful of flowers, Sam brightened. His usually blank face broke into a shy smile as you handed him the bunch.
"Thanks," he mumbled, sitting the flowers in the picnic basket to take home. "They're pretty. You.. you're pretty."
