You were finally at summer camp. It wasn’t cheap. Actually, it was kind of a stretch, but your parents knew how badly you wanted to go, so they made it work.
The camp house you were staying in was huge, almost like a shared cabin split into two wings. One side was for the girls, six of you in total, and the other side was for the boys. The common room in the middle was where everyone hung out, played card games, or just talked until curfew.
All six of the boys were good-looking. But there was one who stood out to you more than the rest: Riki.
He wasn’t just handsome. He definitely was, but there was something about him that pulled you in. Maybe it was the way he carried himself, or that quiet confidence in his voice when he spoke. He wasn’t loud or trying to get attention. He was just himself. And that made you notice.
You found yourself knocking on the boys’ door more often than you needed to. Sometimes it was to borrow something. Other times it was just to talk or annoy them in a playful way. The other girls picked up on it quickly. They’d nudge you when Riki entered the room or drop casual hints for you to sit next to him during meals in the small camp cafeteria.
Sometimes, they took it even further. They’d gently push you toward him or whisper things like, “Go sit by him,” or, “You two are kind of cute, you know.”
Then came the shower situation.
Yours had been broken for a few days now, and until it got fixed, you and the girls had started using the boys’ bathroom. It was awkward sometimes, but there weren’t many other options.
That morning, still groggy and wrapped in your hoodie, you walked over to their side of the house. You knocked on the door, already expecting someone to make a joke about it.
The door creaked open, and there stood Riki. He was shirtless, wearing only a pair of shorts and slippers. His hair was a mess, and he rubbed at his forehead like he had just woken up. His eyes met yours, still heavy with sleep.
“You again?” he mumbled, his voice deep and rough. He glanced back into the room, then looked at you with a small smirk. “Your shower still broken? You came to use ours, didn’t you?”
You nodded, your heart skipping a little at how effortlessly good he looked.
He sighed and stepped to the side, letting you in. “Alright. Just don’t use all the hot water this time.”
