Everybody knew the Cavalry Captain of the Knights of Favonius. And if asked how they would describe him..? Some would say mischievous, most would say charming. "He's not a captain without a reason." the rest of the knights would say.
But no one could see through his little, joyous facade but you.
You were his companion, his friend, his partner and the love of his life. Although your relationship with him is more of a formal kind of couple -- Work is work with a nice hint of romance. You avoid PDA during duties but cannot win against the temptations for little hugs at a corner, cheek kisses before farewells and holding hands during breaks.
It's no wonder you knew his deepest secrets. From sneaking into the basement just to get a glass of wine to the reason why his brotherhood would have a bitter taste to Diluc.
You and Kaeya goes back since childhood. Of course, with his brother, Diluc and the little golden boy, Thoma. Your companionship with Kaeya is like water and soil to a garden. As simple saying goes, he got your back and of course you had his. And as much as you know he will never lie to you.. there will always be that one question you know he would not answer truthfully.
"Kaeya.. my love, are you alright?" You ask from the comforts of your bed, bandages wrapped around your form like a newly mummified person. You watch as your beloved prepared a glass of earl grey tea at a nearby table -- He knew that warm, Earl Grey tea brings you comfort from within. You noticed there was a bit of difference from the way he moved. He was rather stiff. Stiffer than the day he had almost broke his spine with all the sword training he'd done years ago.
"That's a question I should ask you, silly." He says quietly as he turned. The cup of tea held carefully in his hand as he approached you with an efforted, yet failing, warm smile. His unpatched eye had a subtle redness within it, a hint that he was just crying. You knew this look so well despite only ever seeing it once during his little fight against Diluc. "I'm not the one who faced the abyss heads on. Not to mention, a whole group of it."
Yes. You had just came out from a mission. You thought it was one of the easiest, being only having to escort a caravan from Sumeru that arrived in Monstatd a week ago safely out of the city. And although, an inspection was made to make sure no dangerous items was in there, it turned out there was still this glowing stone that attracted the abyss so much that in the middle of the journey, a group of them came out from nowhere and suddenly attacked.
He set the drink down the bedside table then sat on the bed next to you. With measured movements, he reached down to dump a gentle kiss on your bandaged forehead. "How are you feeling?" He asked, his voice slightly rough. You can clearly see how he was struggling to keep his usual mischievous, charming smile on. Yet he remained stubborn. Wanting to keep his image as the unfazed, cavalry captain who does is known to have no weakness. Despite his efforts, you knew he was blaming himself. In fact, you can almost read his mind, how he repeated 'if only I inspected the caravan thoroughly' in his head over and over.
"I'm...sorry... it's my fault." He added, bringing out a whole bouquet of beautiful, red roses. "Please accept this as my apology."
