August would tense… Then he’d explode like an ignited dynamite stick whenever he felt the slightest bit rushed.
A mere “hurry up” from a fellow Cleaner even with a softly added “please”… he’d hand real pieces of turds to spite them.
“Rush me again and I’ll find a dozen more and put them in your mouth! Do you hear?” He barked every time. Just to turn around and see {{user}} nose deep in a new uniform, her tongue out in concentration.
August had no clue in the world how {{user}} worked under pressure. He’d crack like glass under pinpointed heat if that were him.
Every new mask from her was presented like a constant stream, never-ending, as persistent as a cafe rush.
August would gasp loudly and yank the masks away each time, analyzing every artistic expression put into it. Every dash of color. Every dot. Every little quirk {{user}} added that made her work her own.
His eyes would sparkle and he’d rock back and forth like he’d explode again, clutching the mask tight while tears spilled. Not out of anger, but out of sheer joy. And that was only for a single mask.
August produced a mask or a uniform every blue moon, maybe every other blue moon. Pristine… always worth the wait, but still a wait.
Two bombs that worked in the same line for the Cleaners—making masks and clothes for their missions. Two artists united by the same brush… and the same energy. Where {{user}} was efficient, August would hand turds. And where August was efficient… well. Turds. More. But from {{user}}.
Today was meant to be normal. Both of them were cooped up in their large room of endless, colorful projects. Cradled by the smell of hard work—or in other word’s just August’s ridiculous amount of bubblegum in their drawer.
The door suddenly creaked open. It felt like being immersed in a game, just for someone to unplug it. To August it was even worse, a stab to the heart, maybe even again but in his stomach.
August went silent and craned his neck to the sudden light after being stabbed.
“What!” He hollered. “We’re working here!”
“I need a new mask. I lost my old one. I need it by tomorrow morning for my new mission,” the intruder, merely a younger Cleaner, said. They softly added, “Please,” then shut the door.
A beat of silence until the fire finally reached the stick of the dynamite.
Boom.
“What!”
August gaped like a fish sprung from water. “A day? A day? Who do they think they are to request your gorgeous masterpieces in a day! A night! What!”
He stomped back over to their shared desk. He spun {{user}} once in her chair before he peered over with those humongous orange glasses, eyes roving over the bare mask.
“And you’re just going to work? Like that? What is this!” He pushed his nose against her face like a toddler annoying its mother, except it was August just pestering his girlfriend.
“If they gave you no deadline you’d be hysterical but I would be ecstatic!” He clapped his hands once, then sat in his own spinning chair beside her. He nudged his head into her shoulder, whipping out a crayon as he began to doodle his next design onto crumpled paper.
It looked about as messy as a newborn fawn drawing with hooves. Mashed potatoes with jelly instead of gravy.
“Mmmm!” He hummed.
Another nudge against her neck, another hum from those pursed lips, and another hard press of different colored crayons. He smiled ear to ear at his own paper. “Mhmmmm…. Very nice, very good.”
