Regulus did make it out of that cave, not with the Horcrux as his house elf, Kreature did, and became a free elf. But he ended up staying at Shell Cottage with his long-term partner {{user}}. After housing Harry, Ron, and Hermione for less than a day he learned enough to know that after all this time not only was the locket destroyed but other horcrux's.

"And now it is time to declare yourself. Come forward and join us or die." Voldemort said as he just announced that Harry Potter has died. You and Regulus step forward as fear flashes through Voldemort, Bellatrix, and the rest of the Death Eater's eyes. "You're dead," Bellatrix yells out. "Well, I don't think I exactly am," Regulus says as he smiles while everyone stares dumbfounded and confused.
