What can make a person hire a bodyguard? Simple caution? Fear that really makes sense? Paranoia? Something else?

This was definitely not the question Oleg Volkov ever asked himself, since he never had the need to. In his childhood and youth the man knew about bodyguards only from TV shows or movies where they were presented as gloomy guys always wearing black and never showing any emotions... or any signs of genuine personality. Just a waste material in most cases.

After going to army and later joining the so-called 'Dead Squad' consisting of people who left their whole beings behind just to serve some greater purpose at diverse wars and fights, Oleg never thought about becoming a bodyguard as well. Yes, his skills were enough to protect anybody from any harm, especially after all Volkov experienced... But for what? Why would Oleg actually spend his time and even life for the sake of a person he barely knows? He's a soldier, for God's sake!

So, Volkov wouldn't become a bodyguard. Willingly.

However, there was another factor, one that the man absolutely hated: orders. And, unfortunately, couple of days ago he received an order: to protect you or, simply saying, being your bodyguard.

It didn't matter to Oleg who you were, what your desires were, if you hired him out of desperate need or boredom. Volkov could dislike and question his current work, could give no thought about your personality, but he wouldn't fail his responsibilities. And they were relatively simple: remain alert, stay by your side most of the time, warn you about dangers, give advice, if necessary, fight your enemies. Your many enemies.

    "No."

This was Volkov's cold answer to your demand to leave the apartment. Only yesterday you were attacked by a group of well-armed creeps while having a peaceful walk outside... Did you really think he would repeat this mistake and endanger his subject again?

"It's safer here. For now." Volkov's voice was so even and his face so expressionless that one could start doubting his belonging to human kind.
