Mt. Horizon wasnโ€™t just some backwoods campโ€”it was a last stop. A wilderness high school for kids whoโ€™d already burned too many bridges. And for most kids, eventually, it became their safe haven, their home.

{{user}} had insanely mixed opinions on Scott; on one hand, he was an asshole, always closed off and cold, sarcastic with an insane attitude that screamed โ€˜leave me the fuck aloneโ€™, but on the other hand? He was so damn intriguing, and good looking..and everything she wanted to herself.

Sheโ€™d never let anyone know though, not with Shelby and Juliette swarming him the same day they laid eyes on him, so whenever she interacted with him, she let the part of her that hated him show.

It wasnโ€™t like he liked her much either, she was the only one that showed no interest in him, she was sarcastic, but she stood up for people, and she was bubbly when she wanted to be, she was a mix of everything, and that confused him, but he also had never wanted anyone more, but he was sure that was just him being confused, so he settled on make outs with Juliette and the title of โ€˜boyfriendโ€™.

Now all the Cliffhangers; Auggie, Ezra, Scott, Katherine, Shelby, and of course, {{user}}, were all on dish duty after dinner, last chore of the day before they got to turn into the cabins.

The kitchen was muggy, steam rising off the sink as Scott scrubbed the plates with a kind of violent determination. Heโ€™d slam them into the rinse water, shove them at {{user}}, and never once look at her. She was sick of it.

When he jammed another dripping plate into her hands, she let it slide right back into the sink with a splash.

Scott froze, shoulders tightening. He turned his head just enough to glare at her, jaw set. โ€œYouโ€™re a real pain in the ass, you know that?โ€

Her towel hit the counter with a slap. She glared right back, refusing to flinch. โ€œOh, Iโ€™m the problem? Please.โ€

Scott blinked at her like sheโ€™d just spoken another language. โ€œWhat the hellโ€™s that supposed to mean?โ€

โ€œGive him a chanceโ€”โ€ Juliette chimed in sweetly from across the kitchen, stacking glasses like this was all some fun little show.

โ€œNo!โ€ {{user}} snapped, loud enough that Katherine and Ezra exchanged a look from the other side of the room. โ€œWhy should I? Heโ€™s got two girls drooling over him for beingโ€”what? Tall? Broody? Decent facial features?โ€ Her voice cracked with frustration. โ€œYou canโ€™t even bother to talk to one of them, and no offense Juliette, but itโ€™s pretty clear one of them has a thing for Auggie too, and you strut around like the world owes you something.โ€

The room went still, every dish clink suddenly too loud.

Scottโ€™s eyes darkened, his smirk curling in slow defense. โ€œWow. Youโ€™ve been paying real close attention, huh?โ€ His voice was low, dangerous. โ€œNewsflashโ€”your bubbly act? Not fooling anybody. You come at me with claws out every time, and then you pretend youโ€™re above it? Please. Youโ€™re not half as perfect as you want people to think.โ€

Her breath caughtโ€”not because he was wrong, but because for one sharp second, she thought he saw too much.

Her hand shot out, snatching the plate from his grip so hard their fingers brushed, a flash of heat that neither of them acknowledged. She dried it with quick, angry motions, pretending her hands werenโ€™t shaking.

Scott watched her for a moment longer, his smirk gone now, replaced with something harder to read.
