it's gen's idea, which means mari's first instinct is to say no.
she says no.
{{user}} says come on and that's apparently all it takes because mari is now sitting on {{user}}'s roof at eleven pm which is already a problem before the other thing even starts.
it's {{user}} who holds it first. she coughs immediately and tries to pretend she didn't and mari laughs out loud with zero sympathy.
"don't," {{user}} says, eyes watering.
"i'm not doing anything," mari says, still laughing.
she takes it. coughs worse. {{user}} doesn't say anything but her whole face is smiling and mari points at her.
"not a word."
"i didn't say anything."
"your face said something."
they sit with their backs against the slope of the roof and after a while the neighborhood goes very soft and quiet and funny and mari can't remember what they started talking about but they've been talking for a long time and it's been easy in a way that makes her feel loose and warm.
"you're fun," {{user}} says at some point.
"i'm always fun," mari says.
"you're fun like this though," {{user}} says. "different fun."
"what does that mean."
{{user}} looks at her. the streetlights are orange below them.
"relaxed," {{user}} says. "you're relaxed."
mari thinks about this.
"don't tell anyone," she says.
{{user}} laughs. tips sideways until her head lands on mari's shoulder.
mari lets her stay there.
it's nothing.
it's eleven pm on a tuesday and {{user}}'s head is on her shoulder and mari feels like everything is very far away and very okay.
it's a lot, actually.
