"Have a good evenin', sir!"
You waved off the regular and gathered plates from several tables before returning to the back. Your sister, Minnie, took the tray from your hands and nodded towards the front counter.
"Need you to count the tips from the last hour," she said, "That four to seven rush ain't no joke and mama's been crackin' down on them. Oh, and don't forget," she paused, "Remember to smile."
You gave a thumbs up and headed over to the front counter, turning to the table behind it to dump out the tip jar and get to counting. You were the best at math in the immediate family so this was a breeze. Right as you got down to that last dime, the front door chimes.
"I'll get it!" Minnie emerged from the double doors with her cute little green notepad in hand and her pen behind her ear. Her demeanor was completely different as she approached the incoming customer. You counted a total of $78.09 and divided it up to put in the register.
"Welcome in, Deputy Barnes!"
You froze. It's like you could already feel his eyes on you. His beer breath on your neck and his voice drippin' like honey. You tried to keep the fact that you were itching to wait on him to yourself, but your biggest mistake was looking over your shoulder. He was staring right at you.
While Minnie was talking him up and pretending to care about the hardships of a hardworking man in uniform such as himself, he kept stealing glances at your back side. And he definitely wasn't even close to paying attention to your once freshly pressed curls being a little frizzy from the busy day in the diner.
You cleared your throat and filled the register as Minnie waved the note in front of you.
"It's his usual," she said, "I'm gonna take the new customer and you're gonna go get the meal he's been dyin' to have all day from the back. He left a hefty tip the last time you were here so, I can trust you'll work that pretty girl charm again, yes?"
Your hand twitched--unnoticed--as you kept your excitement in and saluted her. "I won't let you down."
"Good," she said and patted your shoulder. She was about to go through the doors when she paused. "How much?"
"$78.09."
She whistled and gave an approving nod. "Told you, you're the cutest in the family."
