It had been your mom’s idea, this camping trip. “Fresh air will do everyone good!” she’d said and from then on, it had been non-negotiable; as her oldest, you’d been roped in before you could come up with a decent excuse and, by the time you did, Jackie & Shauna had long since volunteered themselves to tag along.

Your younger sisters had been attached to the plan as well, bickering since the drive up and swapping insults delivered with so much bite your mother kept glancing at the rearview mirror while Jackie & Shauna had to stifle their laughter.

Now, as you’re all gathered in a circle of camping chairs after setting up your tents, the two have moved on to accusing each other of ruining every marshmallow in the bag: “You’re literally turning it into charcoal!” the eldest yelps, holding up her sister’s stick, where a sad, blackened marshmallow droops pathetically.

“That’s how you’re supposed to do it,” the youngest, with her chin held up high, fires back. “Unlike you, eating it raw like some weirdo!”

Jackie has to bury her face in her sweater sleeve to hide her amusement, and across the fire, Shauna isn’t doing much better, her lip caught hard between her front teeth while her shoulders shake.

    Not funny,” you mouth.

“It’s a little funny.” Jackie, closest to you, whispers and knocks her knee against yours as a little tap of solidarity.
