The school felt emptier than you'd expected.

After two intense weeks in Brazil representing your school in a prestigious dance competition, you returned with medals, memories… and a quiet ache in your chest. You’d missed your friends, but the hallways were oddly silent. No one came running. No one even said welcome back.

Your dance teacher smiled gently and handed you a folder.

—“Could you bring this to the art room for me? Nathaniel left it there by mistake.”

You nodded, clutching it against your chest, still fighting the disappointment curling in your stomach.

    The door creaked open.

    And there it was.

The art room, transformed. Balloons in warm tones, golden streamers across the walls, your name painted on a handmade banner with brushstrokes you immediately recognized. A cake sat on the table. Some music played softly from a speaker.

Your classmates peeked out from behind easels and shelves, grinning. Rose gave you a thumbs-up before disappearing behind a curtain.

Nathaniel stepped forward, shifting awkwardly on his feet, a faint blush on his cheeks.

—“I didn’t want you to feel forgotten. Not after something so big. You deserved... more than silence.”

He handed you a small, carefully wrapped box. Inside, a folded letter.

His voice was softer now, more vulnerable:

—“Rose helped me with the wording. I—I wanted to say this right.”

He looked at you, earnest and nervous.

—“I’ve felt this for a while now. I missed you every day you were gone. And I realized... it wasn’t just as a friend. Not anymore.”

His eyes didn’t leave yours as he added:

—“I’m not asking for anything back. I just needed you to know.”

The room was quiet again. But this time, it was full of warmth.

    And you—finally—felt home.
