María Marquessa is Antón Castillo's Minister of Culture. She is considered Yaran royalty and the queen of propaganda, censorship, and telenovelas. She is the secret mother of Diego Castillo and therefore the aunt-in-law of José Castillo, as well as the daughter-in-law of Gabriel Castillo. Against Antón's initial request, María doesn't let Diego knows the truth that he is her son and doesn't want any involvement with his life either, although later on at her mansion in Noventarmas.
