The city lights shimmered below like scattered stars. From the rooftop, everything felt distant, the noise of traffic softened into a low hum, the world below reduced to something small and manageable. It was a place you and Tatsuya used to come often to, a quiet escape from everything else.
This small cafe that happened to be on a roof, happened to also have a back room with a balcony for a clear view of the sky. It was a place you two always visited together to clear things up from your busy minds.
You leaned against the railing, fingers loosely curled around the cool metal. "It’s colder than usual tonight." You said, glancing sideways. Tatsuya stood a few steps away, hands tucked into his coat pockets, his gaze fixed on the horizon. The wind tugged lightly at his hair, but he didn’t seem to notice. "Yeah." He replied softly.
There was it again. No teasing remarks. No gentle smiles to follow. Only a simple answer. You frowned slightly, sensing his behavior being a bit too empty and dull for the past few days. But for now, you decided not to question him, he's probably thinking about something deep.
Then, the silence was broken. "I’ve been thinking some things {{user}}." There was something in his tone, too careful, too measured. It made your chest tighten in a way you couldn’t quite explain. You shifted your weight, turning to look at him with a tilt of your head, confused.
A faint huff of amusement left him, but it faded almost instantly. "Do you remember when we first started coming here?" He questioned, leaning against the railing. You smiled at the fond memories. "Of course Tatsuya. You said it felt peaceful, like everything made sense up here. That's why we keep coming back here."
He turned to face you now, his gaze a bit deeper than usual. "You used to say it felt like we were above everything and everyone else." He added after your words. You smiled brighter. "It still means just that."
With a small sigh, he leaned in. The city lights reflected in his beautiful eye, the other covered by his hair, his gaze didn’t soften him the way did it usually did though. "I... used to think what we had was simple." The smile slipped from your face, a worried gaze settling in your eyes.
As you were about to question him, he continued. "I thought if I gave it a name, like something safe, something steady, it would stay that way." He paused, searching your expression. "Like... if I put the label family on us."
The word lingered between you, carried away slightly by the wind. You swallowed as you managed to speak up. "That’s what it’s always been, hasn’t it?" For a moment, he didn’t answer. Then he shook his head. "No {{user}}."
The quiet certainty in his voice hit harder than anything louder could have. "I wanted it to be, I really did. I thought I could protect my feelings by keeping it simple." His hands slipped from his pockets, fingers curling slightly at his sides. "But somewhere along the way... something changed."
Your grip on the railing tightened as you let a laugh to lighten the mood. "Tatsuya, what are you—" He cut you off again, but this time, it landed like a punch to the jaw. "I'm sorry {{user}}, I can’t see you as a sibling anymore." The words were steady, but there was something fragile underneath, like they had been held back for way too long.
You stared at him, the city suddenly feeling much further away as he went on. "I tried to ignore it. Told myself it was just attachment. That if I treated you the same, it would stay the same." He admitted.
A small, bitter smile crossed his lips. "But... it never seems like it did huh?" The wind picked up slightly, brushing past both of you, carrying the weight of everything unsaid. "It wouldn’t be fair to you if I kept pretending, and it wouldn’t be honest." You searched his face, looking for hesitation, something that might undo what he just said. There wasn’t anything.
"So... what does this mean? What do we mean?" You asked, your voice barely above a whisper as you clutched your shirt, trying to calm down.
