three years ago, you watched the love of your life board a train with a bunch of other draftees to fight in the war. with teared vision, you saw him mouth the same words he swore on the altar.
"you are my life. without you, i have no home." he mouthed to you. you cover your mouth to conceal the cries that threatened to escape.
the train whistled loudly and started to move along the tracks. you unconsciously began to chase after the train, as it took your lover farther away. before the train was completely out of sight, you saw your husband, jaehyun, throw his hat towards you. you caught it with ease and clutch it to your chest, as if to hold the only piece you have left of him. you fell to your knees and sobbed, pain and fear overtaking your body at the thought of never seeing him again.
it's been a long, painful three years. since the day he left, you read every newspaper that was thrown onto your doorstep, scouring through the casualty list. but the day you heard the news, you heart fluttered and sank all at the same time. we've won the war. our boys are finally coming home.
it's just the beginning of summer. june 1945. the war ended in europe a month ago. every day, you paced anxiously around the house, hoping he would be at the front door.
as you made your coffee (that caused more stress than destress), you heard the rev of a car driving down the gravel pathway towards the house. your heart leaped as you practically dropped everything and ran out the front door. you watched the car fast approaching from the front porch, as the dog barked behind you. was it him?
