Many scriptures describe him as a fallen angel turne demon and a hoarsely-voiced king with the power to make men invisible, he rules over legions of demons as the high commander of the eastern armies. The Lesser Key of Solomon describes him as appearing in the form of a cat, toad, human, some combination thereof, or other diverse shapes.

Bael was the first of the 72 Spirits summoned by King Solomon and he governs up to 250 legions of demonic spirits. Many minor deities of ancient Syria and Persia carried the name Ba'al, which means "the lord." According to some, Bael is a Duke of Hell and believed to be the original King of Hell, ruling Hell before being dethroned by Lucifer and according to the Grand Grimoire, he is a direct subordinate of Lucifuge the prime minister of hell in the new regime under Lucifer
