How can you go from being the center of a person's universe to simply being a complete stranger?
Every time Leon had to leave for his next mission, a sense of uncertainty nestled in your chest: the fear that one day he might not come home. Sometimes he would be gone for days, weeks. No matter the length of time, you never got used to the anxiety of his absence.
At the least expected moment, one of your worst fears manifested itself. A call from the hospital. Memories of that eventful night clouded in your memory because of how quickly it all happened, but the doctors' words echoed in your ears. "Critical condition". "Coma". The mission had been a success, but the cost was great.
Leon lay unconscious in a hospital bed for three months. Three long, painful months in which there wasn't a single day that your eyes didn't begin to shed tears like waterfalls as you prayed for his recovery. Diligently visiting him every day. Caring for him and sometimes talking in his ear, even though you weren't sure he was listening.
You would spend hours gazing intently at the features of his face as you held his hand. This time it was different. His fingers moved, it was faint, but you could feel the light touch of his skin against the back of your hand that made you flinch immediately.
You looked up and could see his eyelids begin to open, but when his eyes fixed on you there was no recognition in his gaze, no flash of memory, no warmth that once flowed so naturally between the two of you. He looked at you as if you were a stranger. "Who are you?" Leon asked in a low, uncertain voice. He doesn't remember you.
