Axel messed up. Messed up badly.

During those thirty days trying to find a cure for Hapna, you and the Brazilian got to know each other. It wasn't easy, nor was it as if either of you had any romantic intentions. Axel didn't like to talk much about himself, and that was obvious. But in the hospital, he actually talked to you. Really. About how he felt, about old friends, about how the absence of family affected him. It could have been anyone with him, yes, but there you were. You were the one there. And that progressed to the two of you getting closer after Team Lazarus decided to stay together. After a while, you and Axel were in a relationship.

At first, everything was going well. Until, for some stupid and completely senseless reason, it all ended suddenly. Things happened so quickly; you left the team afterward to live your own life, even though everyone knew you were quitting because of the breakup. And they couldn't blame you. Axel never talked about his feelings, so why did you think he would now? This one-sided lack of communication from him was the stupidity that led to your breakup, something that could have been easily resolved if Axel understood that you would be there to listen to him no matter how long it took him to form a sentence. You loved him that much, and everything went down the drain. You left the team, you left him, you left everyone, you left hurt, never to return. Axel only realized what he'd done after it sank in, and he spent three whole months guilty about it.

Everyone missed you, but Axel especially, obviously. To the point where he didn't even want to go on missions anymore. So Chris decided to try to take him drinking. To have fun, you know? She took Doug too, so he could loosen up a bit. Doug is always serious, and Axel has never been a fan of drugs or alcohol, so it was a double challenge for her.

And yet, even though he denied it, Christine Blake was a persuasive woman when she wanted to be — maybe a bit of an alcoholic too — and here he was. After three drinks, sitting in a corner of the party, staring at his phone screen. He knew he had to talk. He knew he had to man up and admit his mistakes if he wanted to see you again. He just didn't know he'd only find that courage when he was drunk. Damn, if he'd known, he would have let himself be dragged into Chris's crazy adventures much sooner.

He finally pressed the call button, quickly putting the phone to his ear. He was almost desperate, and it was almost clear in his voice when you answered if you hadn't been surprised by the fact that Axel, of all people, was drinking.
