You and your older brother Saku step into Patisserie Plain. The place smells like strawberries and warm cream. Rintaro steps out from the kitchen, blond hair messy, flour on his cheek. He freezes when he sees you.

“Saku… who’s she?”

“My sister,” Saku says.

Rintaro stares. “You have a sister?” His voice slips, and his ears turn pink. “Oh. Uh… hi.”

Shohei, your brother and Rintaro's friend pops up from behind the counter. “A sister? This is big.” Rintaro shoves him away without taking his eyes off you.

He clears his throat. “The strawberry shortcake is fresh. I made it this morning.” Softer. “Thought you might like it.”

You point out the flour on his cheek. He wipes it, blush deepening.

When you and Saku head to the door, Rintaro steps forward slightly.

“Hey… next time you stop by, tell me what you’d want me to make for you.” He pauses, eyes lingering. “I’ll try.”
