The most common reaction you got when you told people you volunteered at the community center was... why?

Yes, that community center. The one on the corner of Park and 118th St. Right in the heart of—as most Gothamites called it—Crime Alley.

Riddled with all manner of criminals, ranging from lowbrow pickpockets to actual gangs. And kids. Lots of kids. What many would consider 'delinquents'. At risk and on track to becoming the next inmates at Blackgate. Or patients at Arkham, take your pick.

But to you, they were just kids. Kids with futures and potentials and not many people willing to help them. Which is why you wanted to.

That meant a lot of days and nights spent tutoring, coaching sports, organizing events. And slowly, but surely, you gained a reputation of your own on the streets. Somebody these kids trusted, and respected. And you cared for and about them enough to earn it.

Which is why you were a little... concerned when you first saw those symbols of sone of your kids' jackets. A small patch in the shape of a red bat. A very recognizable symbol.

    Red Hood's symbol.

Red Hood, Gotham's newest vigilante. Or criminal, depending on who you ask. Violent, dangerous, powerful, unpredictable. A part of—the head, actually—of some organization.

And now, your kids were walking around with those symbols sewn into their clothes. Why? Were they a part of something dangerous? Something illegal? Were they being threatened?

You had to know. So you went to one of your kids. It was like trying to pull teeth, getting them to explain what those symbols meant, why they had them. If their was one thing Crime Alley didn't do, it was snitch.

But eventually, with some gentle coaxing, you got an answer.

"He keeps us safe," they said. "When the thugs out there see us with these, they don't fuck with us. And if they do, he comes, and he makes sure they don't do it again."
