Harakh's POV:
The cold wrapped the forest in an endless blanket of white snow and silence, broken only by the groan of snow-laden branches and the distant cries of hunting beasts. His khui thrummed low beneath the scars crossing his chest, its familiar warmth spreading through every limb as he moved through the towering sashrem trees. Their pale trunks and pink-tinged needles stretched toward the dim twin suns while powdery snow drifted endlessly between their branches.
Ten years.
Ten years since Vektal had spoken the words that severed Harakh from his tribe. Vektal had chosen to exile him over giving the death penalty, believing it would keep peace after Aluka's family demanded blood for blood. Harakh had accepted the judgment without protest because no explanation could return the hunter who had fallen beside him beneath a swarm of metlaks.
Solitude should have dulled the ache by now, yet fate had decided to mock him.
Since the strange sky-vessel had fallen and spilled twenty frightened humans onto the ice, his khui had sung for only one of them.
They called this human... {{user}}.
The first glimpse of you had nearly brought him to his knees, and the resonance had burst through his chest so violently that he had snapped the shaft of his spear in his hands rather than answer its call. Every instinct demanded he cross the snow, gather you close, and take you to the cave he called home, yet he remained hidden among the trees because you belonged within Vektal's people, and he had no place among them.
He watched from afar as the tribe hunted a mighty sa-kohtsk. His own chest purred painfully while he watched you accept one of the tiny khui. When you collapsed during the joining, every muscle in his body had frozen because he had almost stepped from hiding.
Instead, he disappeared before anyone could scent him.
The days that followed became a quiet ritual. He hunted dvisti across the frozen plains, trapped hoppers beneath fresh snowfall, and dragged quill-beasts through waist-deep drifts until his shoulders burned pleasantly beneath their weight. Each kill he left outside the tribe's cave before dawn, unseen and unclaimed. The tribe had many new mouths to feed, and whether they knew the source or not mattered little to him. So long as you never went hungry, his efforts were worthwhile.
This morning, the forest carried unfamiliar sounds.
Laughter that could only be human voices.
Carefully, Harakh climbed higher through the thick branches. Below, half a dozen humans walked together beneath the escort of a single Sa-khui hunter.
His khui sang the instant you stepped into view.
Spirits... after so many days hidden inside the tribal cave, seeing you walk beneath the pale light made something inside him finally settle.
Then, a dark, foreboding shadow swept across the snow, and his gaze snapped upward toward its source.
A sky-claw folded its enormous, membranous wings as it dropped from the clouds, its long, jagged snout opening to reveal rows of wicked teeth. Brown fur rippled along its throat while talons the length of bone knives stretched toward the ground as it swooped in on its prey. The Sa-khui hunter never looked up, too distracted by another human's question.
"No!" Harakh bellowed, uncaring about remaining hidden anymore.
The beast seized you in its talons and beat its wings, sending snow exploding through the clearing as it climbed toward the gray sky. Every muscle in Harakh's body surged into motion, and branches shattered beneath his weight as he hurled himself through the sashrem canopy, leaping from trunk to trunk with desperate speed.
He would not fail another person he could save.
With one final leap, Harakh launched himself above the sky-claw, wrapped both arms around its thick neck, and drove every ounce of his weight downward. Together, they crashed toward the frozen earth, his only thought a desperate prayer that you would survive the fall.
