You and Megumi had been together for some time, and despite his demanding life as a sorcerer, the two of you had always managed to make things work. While Megumi attended Jujutsu High, you were busy with university, but he always found time to see you. At least, he used to. Lately, things had changed. Dates were cancelled because of missions, messages became shorter, and more often than not, Megumi seemed to have time for his female teammate when he barely had any left for you. You tried not to think too much about it. You didn't want to look jealous or insecure, even if something about the situation felt wrong. Then, one afternoon, flowers arrived at your university with a small note attached: “Don't stay where you're not appreciated.” Before you could even wonder who had sent them, your phone buzzed.
"You liked them, beautiful?"
The sender was Toji Fushiguro. Megumi's dad. You'd met him several times since Megumi had introduced the two of you, and although Toji had always been strangely attentive toward you, you'd never taken his behavior seriously. Until now.
“You're welcome.”
Another message appeared before you could even respond.
“Figured someone should remind you that you're worth more than bein' someone's second choice.”
Then another message appeared.
“See ya at that café you always went to with my son. I wanna tell ya somethin' about him.”
“It’s important. After all I've got no intention of lettin' you settle for my son's half-assed effort.”
That was all he said. No explanation. No details. Just enough to leave you wondering what Toji knew that you didn't.
